Noori Grill

Noori is born on 2018 in São Paulo, Brazil

Being gathered around the fire is one of the oldest sociocultural habits we have preserved. Its control, which originated the development of cuisine, has become one of the great transformations of human history. In the traditional country house, the wood stove was always in evidence: it was around him that the rest of the house was built. Nowadays, the kitchen gains evidence in architectural projects and returns to be a social space, but often the restrictions of space and structure prevent the rescue of the old custom of lighting the fire and there remain cooking and talking, outdoors.

Noori, which means "my fire, my light" and is the name given to newborns in Arabic and Hindu, was conceived after an immersion of three friends Eduardo Gayotto (Designer), Pedro Heldt (Architect) e Plinio Ruschi (Environmental Engeneer) in permaculture, which is a synthesis of traditional knowledge and modern science, integrating design and ecology. They brought from it the Rocket Stove, technology that was cataloged from the observation of the behavior of diverse cultures of the terrestrial globe to burn firewood and to prepare food, obtaining the best possible use of the fuel, from an "L" structure. This always corresponded to a specific proportion (1: 2: 3), responsible for the energy maximization, that is, it produced more heat with the least amount of firewood possible.

"We revisit the wood stove through design, with the concern of giving more than one function to the same object and still fulfill the role of aggregator," explains Pliny Ruschi. "As if you could pause time and bring nature closer," he adds.

Starting from this ratio and with a problem to be solved - how to design a Rocket Stove that combines a barbecue, an oven and a heater - the scribbles started.

Designs, prototypes, supplier search, research, more drawings, and more challenges: in addition to the joining of their functions it was necessary to create a way in which the refractory concrete would not only resist heat, which could reach about 400 degrees celsius, but also to be moved, avoiding cracks, since the idea was also that of a mobile equipment.

The first step was the development of the refractory body. Several studies were done with different recipes over an entire year of testing.

"The goal was to design a product where a Ragu, a Feijoada, a Pasta, a Pizza, grilled vegetables and a meat could be prepared. We wanted to break with the limitations of a standard barbecue, " reveals Duda Gayotto.

With references ranging from the Modernists, São Paulo School of Architecture, the Scandinavian and Oriental furniture design, and the Archigram, a group of English architects of the 1960s, the creation of its form was intuitive - a rocket kind shape. The next step would be the search for materials and suppliers. The equipment has also been designed for durability.

"If the user / cook takes the care that is in the manual, it lasts a lifetime. We already have some accessories and components to launch in a few months, which will dialogue with other cuisines. We always want to bring news to be added to the same equipment ", says the architect Pedro Heldt.

Each prototype that was ready was the time also of the field surveys and tests, which brought to the three friends, more and more the certainty of the path they were tracing.

Meet with several friends around the fire, talking, co-creating and of course, testing various ways of preparing food. Each person, sharing some moment of their life around the fire, whether in the field or at the beach, camping, barbecue with friends, or in the comfort of an enclosed environment, contribute to the process. That hour where the fire and the smoke seemed to stop the time and the rush of urban life in a metropolis like São Paulo.

Perhaps this distortion of time has caused Noori to be born at its ideal rate of gestation, and after more than a year and a half of work, they achieve solution of the problem.

The best part is that the product will never be 100% complete, because whenever it is lit, and it brings together people around you, new ideas come up.

* Noori was built with the help of many friends, and other people, who today we also call friends.
