The Ingmar Bergman Archives is more than a book about cinema; it is an archival gateway into the creative universe of one of modern film’s most influential auteurs. Produced with the permission of the Ingmar Bergman Foundation, this reissue brings back the updated edition of TASCHEN’s previously sold-out and award-winning publication.

With The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries in 1957, Ingmar Bergman established himself at the centre of international cinema. Over a career spanning 60 years, he wrote, directed, and produced 50 films, developing a singular cinematic language through which he explored human relationships, faith, solitude, love, and existential anxiety. Works such as Persona, Scenes from a Marriage, and Fanny and Alexander permanently transformed the narrative possibilities of film.

Created with the special permission Bergman granted to TASCHEN and Max Ström before his death, the book includes writings, interviews, and personal notes that had never previously been published outside Sweden. Bengt Wanselius, Bergman’s on-set photographer for 20 years, searched archives across Sweden to bring together previously unseen film stills and personal photographs.

Edited by Paul Duncan, the volume features contributions from a team of Bergman specialists. Much of the narrative unfolds through Bergman’s own words, while the foreword is written by Erland Josephson, the director’s close friend and long-time collaborator.
