Gene and Spike – Omar Al Gurg

At Dubai Design Week 2022, Omar Al Gurg emphasized that art and craftsmanship can also serve a functional purpose. Through his design studio Modu, he introduced the Gene and Spike collection — a deeply personal project rooted in necessity and transformed into innovation.

During his military service, Al Gurg struggled to find a suitable piece of furniture to hang his belongings. One day, he picked up a pencil and sketched a solution. That sketch eventually became Spike, a customizable wooden coat rack designed to reflect individual needs and lifestyles.

Al Gurg believes that furniture is more than just decor — it’s a connector, a unifier, a social object that brings people together. By making furniture customizable and adaptable, his aim is to foster a sense of community around design, shifting the narrative from furniture as static utility to furniture as interactive identity.

As he shared during the exhibition, Al Gurg’s vision is not about discarding the old in pursuit of the new, but about finding ways to preserve and reimagine what we already have — a philosophy that underpins both his design thinking and the ethos of Gene and Spike.

The Refuge - Marc Ange

Designed as a lounge-like divan made of plush cushions, Le Refuge rests atop a green ceramic base, surrounded by gleaming golden leaves that rise like tall, rooted fronds. With a vision of merging opposing conceptsconscious and unconscious, tangible and abstract, dream and reality—the artist succeeds in evoking a true oasis in the desert.

At Dubai Design Week, our verdict was clear: too beautiful to be real.

True to its name, Le Refuge is meant to be a sanctuary—a place of safety and escape. It channels the childhood dream of running freely through imagined forests, building hideaways far from the noise of the city.

In Marc Ange’s design, that dream takes form, offering a soft, surreal escape for the senses. A standout of Dubai Design Week 2018, Le Refuge remains one of the most unforgettable installations to this day.

Mirage - Sabine Marcelis

For Gallery Collectional’s curated exhibition The Shape of Things to Come, Sabine Marcelis introduced her Mirage collection — a stunning tribute to the topography of Dubai, designed exclusively for Dubai Design Week.

At the heart of the collection lies the Mirage mirror, a layered glass piece that captures the essence of the desert’s blazing sun. By reflecting ambient light while casting a soft, oval shadow, the mirror becomes both object and atmosphere — a sculpture of light and depth.

With its modern and industrial feel, Mirage stands out through the bold use of red, evoking a confident, commanding presence. The soft edges and curved silhouette juxtapose the intensity of the color, creating a rich visual tension that allows the design to shimmer with elegance and complexity.

As one of the most striking highlights of Dubai Design Week 2021, Mirage continues to linger in memory — a vivid echo of heat, light, and conceptual refinement.
