Transparent Spaces, Thatched Roofs: The Hata-Mazanka Experience

Hata-Mazanka Guesthouses are situated in the rural landscapes of Ukraine, standing out as contemporary dwellings inspired by traditional mazanka houses; designed with thatched roofs and natural materials, these structures merge seamlessly with their surroundings, defining the scale of the space in a way that is both restrained and quietly impactful, while their placement harmonizes with the surrounding fields and trees, allowing nature to become an integral part of the spatial experience rather than merely its backdrop.

The Synthesis of Tradition and Modernity

The overall architectural approach embodies a synthesis of tradition and modernity. The structures feature clean, minimalist lines, with stone and wood textures highlighting the character and warmth of the spaces. A central concrete core houses the bathrooms and service areas, while the living and sleeping areas are arranged around it, creating openness and freedom of movement. Stone-and-carpet surfaces extending along the floor further reinforce the sense of continuity and cohesion throughout the space.

Minimal Textures and Objects Integrated with the Space

The interior details are designed with a focus on functionality and understated aesthetics. High ceilings and wide openings create a sense of spaciousness, while the living areas arranged around the concrete core reinforce order and openness. Stone floors, wooden surfaces, and naturally textured textiles add warmth and character to the space. Furniture and objects—ranging from simple, functional beds to handmade ceramics and lamps crafted from natural fibers—integrate seamlessly with the environment, each piece serving both a practical purpose and contributing to the overall rhythm of the space. The arrangement, stripped of unnecessary elements, creates a quiet yet powerful balance, allowing visitors to perceive the logic and natural flow of the environment.

Light, Landscape, and Depth

Among the most striking features of Hata-Mazanka are its roofs and glass facades. The thatched roofs carry the character of traditional mazanka houses, providing both protection and a distinctive visual expression. With the glass facades, the boundary between interior and exterior almost disappears, allowing the landscape to remain in constant view. There is an uninterrupted dialogue between nature and the rhythm of the space. Daylight streams through the glass, while in the evening, the shadow of the roof adds a new sense of depth to the environment.

An Experience Shaped by Nature

The use of surroundings and light enhances the experiential quality of Hata-Mazanka. The buildings maintain a continuous visual connection with the surrounding fields and trees, making it easy to grasp the scale and organization of the space simply by looking outside. Every moment spent indoors is shaped by the rhythm of light, shadow, and natural textures. The fireplace and the tactile qualities of natural materials serve as a quiet yet impactful focal point.
