The Story of Beosystem 9000c

There’s a new revival in the city. Introducing the Beosystem 9000c Music System — a meticulously updated version of the iconic 1990s Beosound 9000 CD player. In the pre-streaming era, the original 9000’s six-disc carousel and theatrical moving clamp mechanism allowed for uninterrupted hours of listening. Designed by renowned British industrial designer David Lewis, who shaped much of Bang & Olufsen’s 1980s and 1990s aesthetic, the Beosound 9000 stood out by boldly displaying its discs rather than concealing them — turning function into art.

A motorized glass lid added to the magic, showcasing B&O’s philosophy of blending technology with enchantment.

Now reintroduced as the Beosystem 9000c, it’s paired with the contemporary Beolab 28 speakers, offering a sophisticated all-in-one setup — perfect for those still devoted to their expansive CD collections. With the compact disc making a quiet comeback among collectors and artists alike, this reimagined system is poised to top every audiophile’s wishlist.

But you’ll need to act fast.

Production began with the sourcing of 200 original Beosound 9000 units, which were returned to Bang & Olufsen’s Struer, Denmark facility. There, seasoned B&O technicians — some of whom worked on the original production — meticulously disassembled, cleaned, repaired, and replaced components as needed. Even the original workbenches were brought back into service. The result? A breathtaking revival of one of Bang & Olufsen’s most theatrical masterpieces.

Product Circularity and Design Permanence

Mads Kogsgaard Hansen, Director of Product Circularity and Portfolio Planning at Bang & Olufsen, describes the Recreated Classics series as a way to showcase how the brand’s unique capabilities in sound, design, and craftsmanship are being used to create long-lasting, circular products.

“We want to demonstrate that second-life products can be just as desirable as new ones — and that a high-quality icon like the Beosound 9000 doesn’t need an expiration date,” says Hansen.

In addition to its iconic six-CD changer, the Beosound 9000 also features an AM/FM radio. Paired with Beolab 28 speakers, the Beoremote One, and the Bang & Olufsen app, the system now supports wireless streaming and playback. AirPlay 2, Chromecast, and Bluetooth 5.0 allow seamless music transfer to the speakers.

Bang & Olufsen has deconstructed and rebuilt the original Beosound 9000 from the ground up. Guided by legendary designer David Lewis’s vision of proudly displaying your music rather than hiding it in a box, the vertical, transparent form turns your CDs into a curated gallery. The Beolab 28 speaker pair brings out every detail with unmatched fidelity — a true celebration of timeless design and sound.

Conceived in London, Born in Denmark

Soho, London, 1995. Bang & Olufsen designer David Lewis stops in front of a record shop window. Something catches his eye: six CDs lined up in a row — a gallery of album artwork. It sparks an idea. What if your music wasn’t hidden in a black box, but displayed like an exhibition?

That’s how the Beosound 9000 was born. A six-disc CD changer meets record shop window — designed so anyone could add a disc to the mix, and your home could be filled with an endless flow of sound.

The restoration process reverses the original color scheme of the Beosound 9000 and pairs it with newly designed aluminum lamellae that echo the cylindrical form of the Beolab 28. The combination of black and natural aluminum finishes is beautifully balanced by the CD player's signature red LED display.

“We also wanted to celebrate the recent revival of physical media,” says Hansen. “Vinyl and CDs have become something truly special — a way for people to invest time and energy into connecting with the music and the artists they love. With the launch of the Beosystem 9000c, we’re celebrating timeless design and the passion for immersive listening. Ultimately, it’s about keeping the joy of choice in listening alive.”
